that was cool Loki, where did you get it or how did you do it?
Jason has a cool sound there, although he plays a little sloppy in some places, for instance that fast part right before the riff that goes into the first guitar solo, and here and there he hits some others strings, oh well, I guess even professional players make mistakes.

yeah, plus you gotta consider this. Even with their ear monitors in, Metallica had to contend with the full San Fran Symphony. I find it hard to play exactly right if I can't hear my bass, which is all the time LOL. You also can't just stand there and watch your neck. I think that was pretty good considering the obstacles. I would probably slopped that one worse haha. See you all later!

Hey. Sorry I haven't checked back here in a while. This boards been quiet lately Remember that Jason is a fairly sloppy bass player. He's said so himself. I wouldn't expect any better from him. Actually, I didn't do that. I got it from a guy who singled out James' voice from every track on S&M but since there is no vocals on Ktulu, he did Jason's bass instead. There was some discussion over at chophouse as to whether it's real or not but I'm now fully convinced it is real becuase he did the same thing with James' voice and that was definatly 100% the real thing. Nobody but James' could've been singing there. The bad part is: The guy who did this won't talk about it at all. He's keeping his lips tightly sealed even after many many questions as to how he did it. I think that it has something to do with the 5.1 Surround sound from the DVD. I think that he just ripped the center track from that (which is impossible without 5.1 surround sound so you could only do this with DVDs, not CDs). Generally, with metallica concerts, James' has his guitar panned to the left and Kirk to the right. Drums are kinda panned all over. And Bass and Vocals are usually in the center. So ripping the center track would leave the essence of vocals and bass ideally. Unfortunatly, I don't have a 5.1 surround sound system (yet) so I can't test this theory out Do any of you have a 5.1 surround sound system?

yes and your theory is generally correct, depending on how the mix is done and you have the Metallica mix down pretty well

Listening to it today, I noticed the wah and dist are missing, but when you watch the dvd you can see Jason using the wah and when you turn off the orchestra, you can hear it even better, so where has it gone?
you only hear clean bass on this track, very weird.

Well Jason does use multiple rigs, so maybe that was just his main amp, and the distortion wah combo is gone... having a wet rig and a dry rig is common, along with having direct to the desk

that could explain the missing wah, but that would also mean that it is panned somewhere else then center mid, according to Loki's story about the 5.1 stuff.
still very weird.

well I have the S&M DVD and I have the 5.1 and you Can't hear the wah or any distortion on the bass signal. you can clearly hear Jason's playing and it sounds just like that track with the bass channel cranked up with everyone else quiet. Who knows, maybe the wah wasn't even switched on at all,,, it could have been a technical error.... which is why I never rely on someone else to switch my effects.

I don't know about the DVD since I don't have it but on the CD the distortion/wah is hear but it is far in the background and not very noticable. I think Jason wanted more of a pure bass sound with just a little bit of wah to be reminiscent of the original but adding his own style of course. BTW: I've been messing around with Phase Cancelling and some other weird high-tech audio tools and I figured out how to get just the very center track of any stereo recording. Meaning anything that was panned left or right at all is taken out which would leave 1 guitar track (Instead of 3 or more) some drums, vocals and bass. Pretty cool stuff.

Hey Greg, pick a song you know well, play it through a boom box and hook two positive wires to one speaker.... hook the right hot to one terminal and the left to the other, the results are really neat, you hear background things and the front stuff gets quiet. Dont do that with a high power stereo just try it with a boom box where you can wire the speakers yourself!

that's pretty cool, you can also get rid of the center channel by only connecting the positive signal wires of a cd-player or something to your stereo, not the negatives.
